Are you a Higham, too?

Posted by on July 11, 2011

Did you stumble on to my site? Foolin’ around at work and thought you’d just type in www.higham.com? I hear from about one Higham a month.  Don’t be shy!  Tell me your story.

This is not a picture of me. The Dumbledore look-alike in the middle is Thomas Roberts Higham. Many people who stumble onto my web page are curious about genealogy. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of my pedigree.

Thomas Roberts Higham converted to Mormonism in the late 1800’s in England, and traveled to Utah in the handcart companies you may have heard about. My family’s center of gravity is still in Utah, with half of my brothers and sisters in Utah, and the other half scattered around the US.  If you want to know more, you have to send me an e-mail!

In 1997 my lovely wife gave me a Christmas present that any nerd would love.

    Their very own domain.

Fast forward 14 years, and I have have heard from a lot of Highams — from the UK, US of A and Australia. I wish I had a list of comments here of all who have stopped by. But there is no time better to start than now. So, please feel free to introduce your self.

I was married to Kenneth N. Higham from Oak Hill Forest in Ontario, Canada and we had a daughter Laurissa K. Higham. He has a brother Robert Higham and their parents were Robert and Roberta Higham (both deceased) from Ottawa, Canada.

I was born Sandra Higham in the U.K.My parents left England when I was 4 years old.We lived a few years in South Africa and then we went and lived in Zimbabwe,I have been many years back in South Africa. So Highams do get around, even though there does not seem to be any others living here as I cant find any in the telephone directory.

Hi Sandra, Sorry for the delay in replying. I was off the grid for a bit. What part of the UK? My ancestors came from Southamptonshire in the 1850s.

I have an Uncle in So Africa right now, but he’s on my mom’s side — not a Higham. I’ve never been to So Africa (closest I’ve been is Tanzania) but would love to visit some time. The world is a big place and there isn’t enough time to travel everywhere I’d like to.

What do you do in So Africa?

I am a Higham and would like to know about history of the Highams we may somehow have known Robert and Roberta! My grandfather was born in 1919 October 3rd and born in utah(Richard Homer Higham) his fathers name was Thomas Higham I believe to be born in 1800’s.

  5. Richard Hickam

    Greetings,
Doing a cursory online geneology check, Hickam appears to have derived from Higham. Have you seen Higham village’s website in England? Anyway, just browsed onto your site.
    Cheers,
    Richard

Sorry it has taken this long to reply! I was overseas in July and your comment got buried in my inbox. There are other Higham derivations, like Hiom, but I was unaware Hickman was one. Makes sense, though. I’ve been to Cold Higham, in Southhamptonshire. I haven’t been to other Higham-named villages, like Higham Ferriers. My ancestors came from the COld Higham area.

      Are you in the UK?

Hi, I am a Higham from Yorkshire in England. Really interested in learning more about the Higham surname and whether there are more Highams from the UK too?
I was originally told that the Higham surname originated from Scotland in regards to the Highlands. Any other information on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks 🙂
